"Embossing" on Furniture -- Raised Stenciling on Your DIY Furniture Project
~Video Tutorial~

Are you looking to bring a simple furniture piece that you plan to paint to the next level?  Create dimension and elegance with raised stenciling.  Raised, or 3-D stenciling gives the look of embossing to a furniture surface.  It also creates a beautiful canvas for decorative painting techniques using two-tone painting with some light distressing, or by using colored waxes or glazes.

What materials do you need?
Baby Cradle with Raised Stenciling, Ready to Paint

(1) Your furniture piece;

(2) A decorative stencil (preferably something with detail).  If you make your own stencil, I recommend using 6 mil thick plastic sheets so that the stencil will be able to withstand the embossing process.

(3) An embossing medium--this can be a texture/stucco paint that you can buy in a big box store, Plaster of Paris, drywall mud or heavy duty spackling paste, or an embossing medium like Autentico's Terrapieno Embossing Paste.  Whatever medium you use must be thick enough to dry solid and not disintegrate.  If you are using drywall mud that is watery, I recommend letting it sit out for awhile to lose some moisture (you can spray it with a spray bottle and mix it, if it gets too dry.)

(4) A cake icing smoothing tool.

(5) Painters tape (optional).

Now that you know what materials you need, watch my video for a tutorial on how to do this easy, but beautiful decorative painting technique.

Once you have completed the raised stenciling, place your stencil with the still-wet medium in a pan of water or under a spigot and gently wash off the remaining embossing medium, so you can reuse your stencil again.

Enjoy!
